It was 6th final for the Nadal after making a comeback from injury after 7 months. Nadal has already won 5 titles since his comeback to tennis circuit and he is looking at his best of form as well as in his fitness. After winning the Madrid open on clay court he was clear favorite for the Rome masters title as well because it is also played on the clay court. Nadal is participating in the Rome masters for the 9th time and he has already won this title 6th time in past.
This final was between the no.2 in the world Roger Federer and the no.5 in the world Rafael Nadal. It was 30th clash between the two stalwarts before this in 29 meetings Nadal won 19 matches against the Federer out of which 12 came on the clay court. As this final was also on the clay court so Nadal was considered as favorite. Stadium was houseful well before this expected epic clash between the Federer and Nadal.
Rafael Nadal with his 7th Rome Masters Title |
Eying for his 7thRome title Nadal started very well and he got good support from his opponent who committed number of unforced errors in the match. Nadal won the first set 6-1 which shows his level of game and his domination over the opponent. With this score line Nadal gave the hint of the form he is in especially on the clay courts. Whenever Nadal plays on the clay court, he looks simply unbeatable and different player altogether. The story remained pretty much same in the second set as well where some resistance displayed shown by the Roger Federer. But, Nadal won this set with the score line of 6-3 comprehensively and also the championship within 1:08 minutes. The game which was expected to be an epic clash turned out to be dead rubber. Maybe it is because Nadal (“the King of Clay”) looks invincible on clay courts. With this win Nadal won the Rome masters for record 7th time and also increased his tally of ATP masters to 24.
Nadal-Federer Head to Head :-
Nadal Won Federer Won
Clay Court 13 2
Hard Court 6 6
Grass Court 1 2
With his current form, fitness and the kind of domination he is showing he is looking as the clear favorite for French open. If he wins that he will win it for the 8th time which will be a world record. There is no player who is looking to stop him to doing that. But, Nadal has to be careful of the N Djokovic, Andy Murray and Swiss Legend Roger Federer. Out of these Djokovic is the one who has won most matches in recent past against him and he has defeated Nadal on clay court 3 times which is most he lost against a single player on clay so he is a serious threat for his 8th French Open title which is starting from May 26th in Paris.
